Requiem for a Dream — Darren Aronofsky, 2000 Production designer James Chinlund's first collaboration with Darren Aronofsky and an early revelation — that production design could employ a visual manifesto, a set of rules working in parallel to the narrative to complement and amplify its impact. On Requiem, that meant removing the color red entirely from the film's palette, so that when it first appeared in Sara's red dress the effect was psychedelic, mirroring her deteriorating mental state. Achieved on a micro budget, the film established a working methodology that would define his practice going forward.
